Lesson 40 The Power of Words

In the early twentieth century， people suffered through many wars。

二十世紀早期，人們經歷了很多戰爭。

When World War II was over， an organization called the United Nations （the UN） was formed to help countries talk about their problems instead of fighting。

當第二次世界大戰結束後，一個叫做聯合國的組織成立了，幫助國家談論他們的問題而不是戰爭。

That was in 1945。

那是在1945年。

Today there are 193 member states in the UN。

今天聯合國已有193個成員國。

The headquarters of the UN is in New York City。

總部位於紐約。

The head of the UN， chosen by all the member states， is called the Secretary-General。

UN的領導，由所有成員國推選出來， 被稱作總秘書。

The UN Security Council has fifteen members，

聯合國安全理事會有十五個成員國，

five of which are permanent members - China， France， Russia， the U。K。 and the U。S。

五個常任理事國——中國、法國、俄國、英國及美國。

Many times since 1945， the UN has sent armies to keep peace between two fighting countries。

1945年之後，很多次聯合國派軍維護兩站戰亂國之間的和平。

It helps the situation， but sometimes it is not successful。

它改善了狀況，可有時候並不成功。

It is not always easy for the members to reach an agreement。

讓成員們達成一致並不總是一件很容易的事情。

Just imagine how difficult it is to satisfy all 193 members！

想象一下，讓193個成員國都滿意有多難！

However， the UN is still the best way for the world to solve its problems。

然而，對世界而言，UN仍然是解決問題的最好方式。

Let‘s hope that the great idea they had in 1945 to prevent war will last forever。

1945，他們的想法是阻止世界戰亂，讓我們期望這一偉大想法將永遠延續下去。

Words - even angry words - are always better than war！

言辭——甚至是爭論——總比戰爭更好！
