定語從句是一種用句子作定語修飾名詞的主從複合句，通常直接跟在被修飾的名詞後面。被修飾的名詞稱為先行詞。定語從句一般由關係代詞引導。關係代詞連線定語從句和先行詞，本身又在定語從句中充當某個成分。例如：

Iknow the man who spoke to you just now。

先行詞 關係代詞（who）在定語從句中作主語

我認識剛才和你說話的那個人。

1。關係代詞who（m）， which，that

that引導的定語從句

that作關係代詞時可以修飾表示人或物的名詞，作賓語時可以省略。例如：

The gril that is sitting under the tree is a good runner。

坐在樹下的那個姑娘是很好的賽跑運動員。

The picture that hangs on the wall was painted by him。

掛在牆上的畫是由他畫的。

The cartoons （that） they have made are always welcomed by the children。

他們製作的動畫片總是受兒童歡迎。

Finally， the thief handed everything that he had stolen to the police。

那賊最終把偷的全部東西交給了警察。

The best that I could do was to apologize。

我唯一能做的就是賠禮道歉了。

This is the most interesting story bookthat I have ever read。

這是我讀過的一本最有趣的故事書。

2。必須用that作關係代詞的情況

當定語從句先行詞含形容詞最高階，或者表示序列意義的形容詞以及only時，關係代詞必須用that。例如：

This is the best film （that）I have ever seen。

這是我看過的最好的電影。

The best （that）we can do is try to stay cool and muddle through。

我們能做的頂多就是設法保持冷靜，矇混過關。

That was the only science fiction film （that）I was interested in。

那是唯一一部我感興趣的科幻片。

The first place （that）I visited in Beijing was the Great Wall。

我在北京參觀的第一個地方是長城。

This is the longest （that）I‘ve ever seen。

這是我見過的最長的（某物）。

He is the cleverest student that Ihave seen。

他是我見過的最聰明的學生。
