但如果你被人問到
What's eating you?
你會不會一臉懵逼？
我們學習英文一定不要逐字逐句理解，
就像
How are you?
不是
“怎麼是你”
How old are you?
也不是
“怎麼老是你”
What's eating you?
當然也不會是
“什麼吃了你”
很明顯這樣理解完全不符合邏輯，
那麼
What's eating you
到底是什麼意思呢？
在英語中，
eat
除了有“吃”的意思，
還有
“使不安，使焦慮”
的意思。
所以
What's eating you
其實是在詢問：
你為什麼情緒低落？是什麼使你心煩？
What's eating sb 是什麼使…煩心？
當你覺得某個人好像因為某事所困擾，
以至於整個人都不在狀態時，
就可以用這句話來關心他：
You seem really upset. What's eating you?
你看起來很沮喪。什麼事讓你不開心了？
Jack‘s in a strange mood - I wonder what’s eating him？
傑克今天脾氣怪怪的，什麼事兒讓他那麼煩啊？
Boss is angry with everyone。 What’s eating him？
老闆對每個人都很生氣。什麼事惹他了？
那如果當自己心情低落、不舒服的時候，
想要跟朋友傾訴，就不能再用這個表達了，
這時候你可以說：
I'm not myself.
按照字面意思理解，I‘m not myself
是“我不是我自己”的意思，
但在這裡，
not oneself
表示的是：
not feeling as one normally should， either physically， mentally， emotionally， etc。
感覺不對勁，不管是身體上、精神上或情感上等等。
也就是說，I’m not myself 表達的是
一個人的狀態、感覺不好，
所以
I'm not myself
正確意思應該是：
我不在狀態，我不舒服，我心神不寧
I‘m not myself today， otherwise I’ll do it myself。
我今天有點不在狀態，否則這事我就親自去做了。

表面翻譯過來是“吃了某人的話”，
那麼對應成漢語就是“食言”嗎？
看上去沒啥毛病，但是其實
eat one's words
≠ 食言
這個表達的真正意思是：
承認自己說錯了話，收回說過的話
相當於 take back one‘s words
Sam said it would never sell， but when he sees these sales figures he’ll have to eat his words。
薩姆曾說這個永遠不會有銷路。可他要是看到這些銷售數字，就得承認自己錯了。
eat your shirt
我們都知道，shirt 是常穿的服飾“襯衣”之意，
有的小夥伴第一反應就是，
它的意思不會是“吃你的襯衫”吧？
從字面意思看，的確是這樣，
但實際上，
eat one's shirt
有兩種意思↓↓
1. 收回前言，承認說錯話
英文釋義：
To face the repercussion of being incorrect after one‘s claim， boast， or assertion is refuted； to eat one’s words。
在主張、吹噓或斷言被駁斥後，面對不正確的後果；承認說錯話
You‘ll be eating your shirt if this new engine isn’t as fast as you say it is。
如果這臺新引擎沒有你
說的
那麼快，你就得收回自己的話。
中間的 one‘s 可以替換成各種所屬格，
比如：my， your， his， her 等等。
2. 虧本，蒙受損失
英文釋義：
To take a loss on a wasted or unfruitful investment。
在浪費或沒有結果的投資上蒙受損失
I ended up having to eat my shirt on the cost of the lumber for the new shed after it was ruined by the rain。
大雨把新棚子毀了，我最後只能白白損失木材的費用。
eat like a horse
馬在人們眼裡都是勤懇能幹的含義，
當然馬也非常能吃。
在小時候我們學過《馬說》，
當時記載“馬之千里者，一食或盡粟一石”。
意思是千里馬一頓有時能吃盡一石糧食。
石，十鬥為一石，一石約為120斤。
所以，
eat like a horse
就來形容：
人吃的很多
She’s so thin， yet she eats like a horse。
她那麼瘦，可飯量極大。
eat like a bird
eat like a horse 形容吃得多，
那麼相反的，eat like a bird 就是形容吃的少，
一個人如果吃的和鳥差不多，
那麼自然就說這個人吃的很少。
Lucy is very slim， because she eats like a bird。
露西很苗條，因為她吃的很少。
